Tyre pressure is one of the most frequently neglected aspects of vehicle maintenance, yet it has a direct impact on fuel consumption, tyre wear, handling, and safety. Checking your pressure takes less than five minutes and requires only a simple gauge — available at any petrol station or purchased cheaply for home use.
What Pressure Should Your Tyres Be?
The recommended tyre pressures for your specific vehicle are found in the owner's manual, inside the driver's door jamb, or on the inside of the fuel filler flap. These are usually given in PSI (pounds per square inch) or bar. Note that front and rear tyres may require different pressures, and many manufacturers specify a higher pressure when the car is fully loaded.
How to Check Your Tyre Pressure
Always check pressure when the tyres are cold — meaning the car hasn't been driven for at least two hours or has travelled fewer than two miles at low speed. Remove the valve cap, press the gauge firmly onto the valve stem, and read the pressure. Compare this to the recommended figure and add or release air as required. Replace the valve cap securely when finished.
How Often Should You Check?
Check tyre pressures at least once a month and before any long journey. Tyres naturally lose around 1 to 2 PSI per month, and temperature changes — common in West Yorkshire's variable climate — can cause additional fluctuation of 1 PSI per 10°F change in air temperature.
